How to choose right chef jacket?

The chef’s jacket is the most popular form of chefs wear, that and the hat. One of the most important functions that the chef’s jacket serves is for identification. When you see the chef’s jacket you immediately know who that is. When you enter a restaurant and need to speak to the chef that is what you will look for. The jacket is one of the ways that a chef sets themselves apart. In high end restaurants, wearing the jacket is mandatory. This is because you can tell a lot about a restaurant by looking at the chef. Having that jacket speaks volumes to the customers.

There's nothing like the freedom we 'used' to enjoy in the construction industry to make you feel 'really good' when you got up in the morning. I'm just glad that I was born in the era of 'common sense'. When we weren't wrapped up in cotton wool for our own safety like building workers are today.

Safety first

The black chef jacket is one of the options that chefs have. There are black jackets that have white or red piping. A long sleeved jacket is most suitable for open kitchens. Chef jackets are usually double breasted made from very thick cotton. This is to ensure that the chef has the required protection from all the heat in the kitchen. The safety of the chef is one of the purposes of the jacket. The material used is usually fire resistant. This means that a chef is protected from any accidents that may occur in the kitchen.

The irony is; that with all of the 'health and safety' equipment everyone has to wear and use these days, workers are actually put in 'more' danger because of the 'physical restrictions' the safety-wear imposes. Not least the wearing of goggles and gloves in a trade that relies on peripheral vision to establish what's going on all around at all times, and the natural 'feel' we need to 'know' if what we're doing is accurate or not.

The long sleeves on the chef’s jacket also prevent any harm to the arms. The kitchen is usually a busy place. The running around sometimes may cause some minor accidents like spilling hot soup your arms. With the thick sleeves of the jacket, that would not be a cause for concern. One may be wondering about the heat in the kitchen. Seeing as the jacket is made of thick cotton, the chef must suffer from the heat. This may be true in some cases but not always. There are some jackets that are made with cooling technology. The price range for these jackets however may not be in the favorable category.

If you've ever put on a pair of H&S goggles, you'll know just how they restrict your vision. You find yourself holding your head at strange angles just to get a 'feel' for your environment.

Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen

Having that black chef jacket is also a good way to make sure that you stay clean. With a black jacket, spotting gravy stains may not be as easy as in a white one. However, the jacket still needs to be clean. A double breasted jacket is favorable for a chef that works with too many ingredients. When the jacket gets stained, they can just unbutton it and switch to the other side. With the thick material, the lower layer of the jacket remains clean even in spills.

Have you ever tried to do anything 'artistic' with gloves on? It's a contradiction in terms to say the least. Yet construction workers 'are' artist mainly. You have to have a 'feel' and intuition for the work. You have to have a sixth sense almost to know when you've got it right.

Running a restaurant or even a diner professionally means going all the way. Providing the right uniform for workers is essential. Just as the chef has to wear the right uniform, so do the waitresses. The waitress uniform depends on the choice of the employer. Most eateries will have their waitresses in some kind of uniform. There is no standard really. The waitress apron however is something that a serious employee will have. With the apron, a waitress is able to do their work efficiently. Aprons also have pockets where a waitress can keep their tips among other things. This way, their hands are free to carry trays around.

Take the laying down of plastic sheeting on wooden floors for protection. Somehow, health & safety seem to think it's a great idea and it should be implemented everywhere. I had a stand-off several years ago regarding this very issue. Plastering is a wet-trade, and as the name implies, a lot of water gets used, and dripped or splashed everywhere. What do you get when you put water on top of any plastic sheeting? As any nine year old child will tell you, you get a skating rink.

A chef’s jacket is something every self respecting professional should have. The specific type of jacket will depend on the chef or the restaurant management. Whatever the case, it has to provide the chef with the protection they need. The black chef jacket is one of the many options available. A restaurant also has to make sure that servers have the waitress apron to keep their uniforms clean.

Health & Safety is a 'money-gravy-train' thought up by the Boffins that are paid a fortune to sit around all day dreaming up new ways to extract our hard-earned wages and put them to 'no good'. Construction health & safety workers were earning TOO much money and had to be slowed down. This has been achieved by creating jobs for people with little or no intellect to run the lives of those who maybe have 'too much' natural savvy, and brimming with common sense.
