The History of Nursing Scrubs

Medical attire has changed drastically over the last century. As the depth of scientific knowledge and the awareness of bacteria spreading disease has grown the practices and protocols of cleanliness transformed not only the medical attire, but also the entire profession. Medical professionals are now required to follow a strict dress code in order to maintain a high level of sanitation. Unfortunately, this was not always the case.

Uniforms have been required by nurses for quite some time now, but surgeons in the early practices would simply perform surgeries in their street clothes. These surgeries were done in a large room much like an auditorium so that students and spectators could watch. The room was unsterile, the surgeon used his or her bare hands, the instruments used in the surgery were not sterile and they usually reused needles. Strangely enough, the success or failure of a surgery in those days was determined by the amount of blood stains on the surgeon's apron. The connection between bacteria and disease had not been discovered. Joseph Lister was one of the first to begin to establish a new precedent. With much controversy and opposition the effectiveness and success of new, more sterile protocols slowly became widely practiced.

Today, medical professionals have a very specific dress code and a very specific protocol to follow in keeping to these effective sterile environments. Nursing scrubs have become widely used among many of the different health care professions. Scrubs had initially been used for surgeons to wear in a "scrubbed" environment to ensure cleanliness, but have quickly become popular as the standard of uniform for doctors, nurses and other medical professionals such as dentists. Doctors also wear white lab coats which were initially worn because the physicians wanted to represent themselves as scientists to help emphasize the transition to a more scientific approach.

Although medical scrubs and nursing scrubs were initially worn and used to ensure cleanliness in a very sterile environment they also offer medical professionals style and comfort. The cleanliness of a medical professional's attire will always be most important and significant in the success of that practice, but now one can enjoy the style and comfort much like a nurse would find in the stylish brand  Scrubs

Urbane Scrubs carry many stylish features in their wide selection of scrub tops, scrub pants, scrub jackets, lab coats and nursing shoes such as fitted pants, wrap tops, cross over tops, low rise pants and boot cut pants. In addition to these styles they come in several different color combinations. Most of which are solid colors or a solid and a trim colors such as Red with Black trim, Navy with Ceil Blue trim and Pink with Orange trim.
